Intel has announced the new branding for the Silverthorne processor and the “Menlow” platform. From now on, the Silverthorne processor will be called the “Intel Atom” while the Menlow platform will be called “Intel Centrino Atom”. It is also announced that the Intel Atom processor will be used in the Intel Centrino Atom platform.

Comprised of some 47 million transistors, Intel’s new Atom processor die measures 25mm2; so small that you could fit eleven of the cores in the area of an US penny. Built on Intel’s 45nm hafnium-infused high-K process, these chips are said to have power consumption characteristics in the .6 - 2.5 watt range, though they’re reported to have 512KB of on-chip cache and an operating frequency topping out at 1.8GHz currently.
