JAJAH.Babel realtime language translation service
Posted byAug 7
Jajah in conjunction with IBM Research has launched JAJAH.Babel, a very simple language translation service using a telephone unit. All you have to do is dial the access numbers (listed below) in the US, Australia, or United Kingdom and speak the text you want translated from English to Chinese (Mandarin) or vice versa after a voice prompt. The service will replay your message and all you need to do is to acknowledge its accuracy and you will hear the corresponding translation after a short delay.
Below are the access numbers:
USA
+1-718-513-2969
+1-718-513-2968
United Kingdom
+44-203-3557628
+44-203-0516561
Australia
+61-390-015794
+61-390-011061
The service is a perfect tool for English speaking people who are in China to watch the 2008 Olympics. They can easily start a conversation with a Chinese by handing the telephone back and forth with each party speaking in their own language.
The only limitation is that the access numbers become international numbers if you are in China.

Such a “realtime language translation service” may work in a limited way, but there is a better non-technological solution - Esperanto.
Esperanto was planned as a neutral means of international communication. There are certainly Esperanto speakers in China. Indeed China Radio International broadcvasts in the language.
