Good news to all PSP users out there, Underminer has released version 0.2 of its PReSS software. PReSS which stands for Portable RSS is an RSS reader for the Playstation Portable. All you have to do is to connect PReSS to any WiFi access point and you can start reading RSS feeds. PReSS can read any standards-compliant RSS feed containing images and text with ease, unlike the built-in firmware RSS reader, which is limited to audio, video and image feeds.
PReSS v0.2 now supports viewing of images in full screen as well as the ability to add links to browser bookmarks.

With the official statement from Sony that Skype will be coming to PSP. Team Noobz has unvelied its new project called “furikup”. Furikup is a free software that enables your PSP to make VoIP calls using SIP protocol, an alternative to Skype. The major advantage is that the software works for both PSP Slim and regular PSP units.

Here are some of Furikup’s best features:
- It’s free software - in both the beer, and speech senses.
- You can use it anywhere in the world, subject to signing-up to a suitable local SIP-based voice-over-IP provider and being near a usable wifi access point. In many countries, you can find those for free or nearly-free - e.g. with SIPGate, in the UK, you can call to your PSP from any standard phone (landline or cellphone) for just the standard local call cost, and from PSP to another SIP phone (another PSP or a PC) for free.
- It runs on both slim and fat PSPs.
- It uses open standards, for maximum compatibility with other phone systems.
- You can use a Go!Cam (Chotto Shot), Talkman microphone, or SOCOM-style headset for audio input. (And even if you don’t have any of those, you can still send audio from a WAV file in a pinch).
The software, according to team noobz is still a beta software and you can make your own improvements since the software is open-source.

Still not satisfied with your PSP’s 4GB or 8GB Memory Stick PRO Duo?

Here comes another great news from Sony, a 16GB Memory Stick PRO Duo will be coming this March for $300.
Whew! I think I should stop for a while and stick with my existing Memory Stick PRO Duo, at least for now.

You’ll notice the question mark in the title of my Blog about PSP and Skype last January 2, 2008 ( “Sony PSP and Skype?”). I placed the question mark since Sony has not yet issued an official statement about this news from their website. Yesterday, Sony has officially issued a press release confirming that Skype will be running on PSP. However, the feature will be available to the owners of the new slim and light PSP(R) (PlayStation(R)Portable) handheld entertainment system (PSP-2000 series) and will be activated using a firmware update which will be available late this month.
New features include:
– Free voice calls between Skype users
– Skype contact list management (view existing contacts, add new ones)
– Skype presence (see which friends are online and available to talk)
– SkypeOut(TM) calls to make calls to landlines and mobile phones
anywhere in the world (requires the purchase of Skype credit)
– Optional SkypeIn(TM) number that lets users receive calls on Skype from
landlines and mobiles anywhere in the world (requires the purchase of
Skype credit)
– View and modify Skype settings and account details (including username
creation, SkypeOut settings, voicemail settings and call forwarding)
After the system update, an Skype icon will be added to the network category in the PSP’s home menu. PSP users who do not have an Skype account can create one by launching the Skype application and following the online instructions. PSP users who already have an account with Skype can immediately sign in using their existing account after launching the Skype application in their PSP.

Since November 2006, there have been suggestions in Skype forum about Skype running on Sony PSP. Looks like the suggestions are already being implemented or will be implemented by Sony and Skype. According to Sony’s CES (Consumer Electronics Show) website, they will be bringing Skype to the PSP. In the PSP system features, Sony announced “Call friends, talk trash to fellow gamers or catch up with acquaintances via Skype for PSP system“. Calling your friends via VoIP while playing with your PSP in a Wi-Fi hotspot would be a very hot and interesting thing to do for the Sony boys out there.
