Samsung has announced its 1.8-inch 120GB HDD, a credit card-sized 4200-rpm USB drive being referred to as SpinPoint N2. Enclosed in a glossy black chassis, the drive draws less than 1.4W and needs just 300mA from a 500mA USB port. Its power consumption is only one-fourth that of a 2.5″ drive and it has a read speed rated at 27MB/s and write speed at 23MB/s.

According to reports, Samsung has been convincing Apple into using the drive for the iPod and the MacBook Air. Samsung will also sell the USB drive in the Chinese market as a stand-alone drive.

Expect the Samsung 1.8″ 40GB version to be priced at $161, 60GB at $191, 80GB at $235 and 120GB at $293.

Lexar unveiled a 16GB version of their JumpDrive FireFly USB Drive. The flash drive features a security software that allows multiple locked-down storage areas on a given drive including their own 256-bit AES encrypted password. The USB Drive has e-ink capacity meter that gives a quick glance at free space even when power is turned off.

Just like other Lexars, the 16GB Firefly is compatible with Windows and Mac operating systems. The Windows version receives a free 30-day trial of Dmailer V7 software, which enables users to backup and synchronize their files, including Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express easily.

The 16GB drive will be available in September for $99.

OCZ Technology Group has unveiled its brand new “Core Series V2 SSDs” in a bid to respond to the demands of enthusiasts and high-performance mobile computing consumers. The new 2.5” OCZ Core V2-series SSDs are available in 32GB, 64GB, 128GB and 256GB  capacities and provide 170MB/s read speed, 98GB/s write speed and an improved seek time of less than 0.2 - 0.3ms. OCZ has added a mini-USB port which allows end-users to increase the performance of their drives with future firmware updates from OCZ.

The pricing and availability for these new Core Series V2 SSDs are still unknown as of posting time.

Super Talent added a swivel model to its family of “World’s Smallest USB Drives”. The Pico D models, which are part of Super Talent’s Pico flash drive series make use of chip-on-board (COB) technology and measure just 39.7 x 13.5 x 4.9 mm. The water-resistant Pico D drives store up to 8GB of information and can support  transfer speeds of up to 30MBps
